Keeping Your Canine Cool

As the temperature rises during the scorching summer months, it's important to ensure the well-being of our furry friends. Dogs, like humans, can struggle with the heat, and it's our responsibility as pet owners to take proactive steps to keep them cool and comfortable. Here are some tips to help your canine companion beat the heat.

Walk your dog very early in the morning or in the early evening.

During the hottest parts of the day, it's advisable to limit outdoor activities. Schedule walks and playtime during the early morning or late evening when temperatures are cooler. Hot pavement can burn your dog's paw pads, so always check the ground temperature before heading out. If it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for your dog's paws.

Never leave your dog alone in your car or on the back of a ute.

Even on cooler days, the temperature inside a car can rise dangerously high.

If you’re taking your dog on a road trip then remember these tips.

  • Keep the air conditioning on when driving with your dog and/or when you are in a parked car with your dog
  • Don’t park in direct sunlight with your dog in the car

Make sure your dog has access to plenty of shade.

Ensure your outdoor space has shaded areas where your dog can retreat from the sun. Whether it's a tree, an umbrella, or a purpose-built shade structure, providing a cool spot is essential. Dogs love to relax outdoors, and having a shaded area ensures they can enjoy the fresh air without being exposed to direct sunlight.

Provide plenty of fresh drinking water.

Ensure your dog has constant access to fresh, cool water. Proper hydration is essential to help regulate their body temperature. Consider placing multiple water bowls around your home and yard, making it convenient for your dog to quench their thirst whenever they need to. You can also add a few ice cubes to their water bowl to provide an extra refreshing boost.

Give them an ice pack, cooling mat or wet towel to lay on.

Invest in cooling mats, ice packs, or wet towels to create a comfortable and cool resting spot for your dog. Place these items in your dog's bed or preferred arresting rea, allowing them to relax on even the hottest days.

Give them water to play in.

Engage your dog in water play to keep them refreshed and cool. Whether it's running through sprinklers, taking a dip in a pool, or enjoying a swim at the beach, water activities are not only fun but also an excellent way for your dog to beat the heat. A wet dog is a cool dog, and the joy they experience during water play can be infectious for both you and your canine companion.
